if you are dealing with extreme heat or even just. moderate heat in your area right now. 80f/26c is when it starts getting toasty for a lot of people. if you are in a heat wave and you have not done yourself the favor of googling fucking “heat exhaustion symptoms” i am shaking you violently right now. look it up. burn the symptoms into your brain. heatstroke is no joke and it can and WILL sneak up on you before you’re aware it’s even an issue. ohh my god
They tend to be less aggressive especially pure blooded ones. In the wild it isn’t uncommon to see a dominant rooster then younger subordinate cockerels following him around. Domesticated chickens are much more aggressive.
Domestic chickens are more aggressive because we originally domesticated them for cockfighting. Domestic chickens are also more hardy ,grow faster, breed more and are more competitive than their wild cousins. Even some average everyday chicken breeds like the Rhode Island Red have heavy game bird ancestry in their breed history.
In places where jungle fowl and domestic chickens co mingle the jungle fowl populations come under threat because the domestics will out compete them and mix with them further diluting their gene pool.
Do we know why domestic chicken breeds tend to be more aggressive with eachother/in general? Typically a goal of domestication is to make the animal more docile so I'm super curious if this happened intentionally or as a side effect!
Bitty is a cochin bantam hatched yesterday. I was going to get a serama but they were much bigger then Ibis despite being the same age so I chose a newly hatched baby instead because they would be gentle and bond quickly to Ibis.
